No one was more surprised that Manchester-raised designer Sarah Burton is in the frame to create the Royal Wbridal dress designeredding dress for Kate Middleton than international design guru Ben De Lisi.
Designer Ben De Lisi: Royal wedding dress can never please everybody_bridal dress,For Ben, who was also rumoured to be among the designers Kate was considering for her big day dress, says he never imagined the princess-in-waiting such a bold shion choice as the Alexander McQueen designer.
Ben,Solar Panel in Manchester to survey his own Principles by Ben De Lisi collection at Debenhams, told me: If it is the case, then Kate has really surprised me. I thought she would have gone with something classic with a twist.
But Sarah is an amazing designer and it would be great for the shion industry if Kate chose to wear Alexander McQueen, and would truly elevate her to shion icon, I think.
Mind you ,wedding dress sales, Ben says he doesnt envy the burden on former Withington Girls School pupil Sarahs shoulders in creating the design for that big Royal day on April 29.
He says: Its maddening as a designer, because the photograph lasts forever, so if you get it wrong youll remember it forever.
Youre never going to please everybody with a design like this,Wedding Dress so you have to be true to yourself and true to the person you are the dress for.
Royal appointment: Kate Middleton orders her wedding dress from Manchester designer Sarah Burton
Meanwhile Ben was also forthright and speaking from the heart when I asked him about the other big shion story of the moment the disgrace of John Gallianos racist comments in a Paris bar that led to his sacking from couture house Dior.
He says: I think John has a lot of soul-searching to do. Theres no doubt hes a genius, but the House Of Dior had no other choice but to let him go after what he said. I just hope he can redeem himself somehow because it would be a deep shame for him and his talent for it to be left to die.
As for American-born Bens future plans, he tells me he hopes to launch a menswear collection with Debenhams, for men to follow in his classic preppy style. |
