The packaging design is the centrepiece of a new sustainability stsizegy from
the company that features a pledge to ensure half of the company's interstateal
clothes and footwear collections are manufactured in line with its S-Index
standard's requirement to use sustainable materials such as organic cotton or
recycled polyester by 2015.
"Over time this should go to 100 per cent but we want to set objectives that
we feel are achievable with what we know today and hopefully technology will
help us to take a step further after 2015," said Zeitz.

He also invited other footwear companies to use the sustainable bag design
and urged the business to adopt universal standards for measuring their
sustaincapacity performance
Another measure the company will introduce is redesigning hang tags for
wear, reducing the amount of paper used by 45 per cent and using recycled
paper.
He added that Puma is currently developing prototypes for the new packaging
in China and expects to roll out the new system during the second half of 2011.
Zeitz said the switch to sustainable packaging will be cost neutral in the
mid to long term, puma ferrari shoes, although he submitted that the packaging would impose higher
costs in the fleeting term becautilize sustainable materials still cost more than
unsustainable materials.
Sportswear giant reckons shoe boxes have run their race
The German firm is also rolling out a number of other sustainable packaging
measures. The company said it will shun using 720 tonnes of polyethylene bags
each year by replacing them with sustainable materials and will also cut supply
chain emissions by simply folding t-shirts one more time in order to halve the
amount of packaging needed.
In manufacturing, Puma aims to shrink CO2, energy, water and waste by 25 per
cent and will monitor progress against targets through an external advisory
board of sustainably experts.
Puma today launched a new form of sustainable packaging that could spell the
conclusion for the humble shoe box, puma gold, slashing waste and carbon emissions in the mode.
Zeitz criticised the lack of a universal industry standard, adding that Puma
would make its new S-Index approach to measuring environmental performance
publicly available.
The bag has been created by industrial designer Yves Béhar, and according to
Puma will use 65 per cent less paper than the traditional cardboard shoe box,
consequenceing in annual savings of 8,500 tonnes of paper, 20 million megajoules of
electricity, one million litres of water and 500,000 litres of diesel.

"Initially there will be a slight negative effect, but that has already been
factored in," he said.
"With today's launch, puma ferrari shoes white, we are the leader in introducing innovative sustainable
solutions in our industry and we hope to inspire our peers to follow suit,"
said Puma chief executive Jochen Zeitz.
A further 192 tonnes of plastic could be saved when the company switches the
existing plastic and paper shopping bags in Puma stores with sustainable
biodegradable bags.
The sportswear giant has introduced a new form of shoe packaging,Android-powered Puma phone to be launched in 2011 , dubbed the
"clever little bag", that replaces the traditional cardboard shoe box with a
reusable bag abnormale of recycled plastic. A single sheet of folded cardboard
contained within the bag protects the shoes during transportation, while
ensuring that the total amount of material used is significantly abated.
The company said that it hopes the built-in bag will also rebate the use of
plastic by 275 tonnes by rendering plastic shopping bags redundant. |
