A study conducted in 2009 demonstrated that 57% of non-smoking adults had an increased level of nicotine in their blood, which indicated that they were exposed to a tobacco smoke. As for the nationwide figure it constituted 45%. <br />According to researches those people who sit within three feet of a smoker are exposed to approximately the same level of secondhand smoke. Government officials also believe that this ban will help to reduce the increasing trash in public places. Besides applying to parks and beaches, the ban would also cover pedestrian malls and plazas, as Times Square. <br />Opponents of this bill, stand against it, some members called it an excessively broad law that would violate the individual liberties. “We will move towards a totalitarian society if we are going to implement those restrictions,” stated Councilman Robert Jackson of Manhattan, who is a non-smoker.
