Temat postu: whom he bought from a zoo in Bandon |
|
|
blished this haven in 1983 for his pet lion, Josef, whom he bought from a zoo in Bandon, Ore., for $500. "My motive was to train him for TV and movies," he says. "He was a very gifted cat and my godsend. Kids could actually ride on him. " Josef is the MGM lion that roars at the beginning of movies and also was the model for Mufasa in "The Lion King." Now, Sammut has 250-plus animals. "It is a hobby that got way out of hand," he Advertisementsays. My husband and I arrive in early afternoon for a guided tour of this unusual facility, where animals are trained for film, TV and stage production work and where retired animals are provided sanctuary. Located among Salinas' fertile growing fields at Vision Quest Ranch, it is in an ideal semi-isolated spot. As we pass animal enclosures lining the narrow entrance drive, we slow down to gawk at a seated dromedary camel and an alpaca lying prone for a nap. We also see a zdonk -- a zebra and donkey cross -- with cute striped legs. Our one-hour walking tour begins with the opening and closing of locked safety gates and the request that we stay in a tight group, which, for me, is shades of "Jurassic Park." Fortunately, no horrific roars or pounding hoofbeats greet us inside. Our young guide, Sarah Mosquera
