U.S. president ramps up economic focus amid skepticism
U.S. President Barack Obama has in recent days been ramping up efforts to convince Americans that he is taking economic and job growth seriously,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], analysts say.The initiative comes at a time when the economy is emerging from the worst recession since the 1930s. But while corporations are seeing robust profits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the job market hasn't yet caught up. And while companies are hiring, they aren't doing so at a rate that would significantly lower the 9.4-percent unemployment rate.
On Friday, Obama visited a factory in Maryland and touted his administration's policies aimed at economic growth. On Saturday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the president's weekly radio address stressed what he called the benefits of the tax cuts extension passed during the lame duck session.
Obama is also slated to address the U.S. Chamber of Commerce next month,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in a bid to reverse the perception that he is anti-business and out of touch with the business community. At the same time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the president has also re-shuffled his administration to give it a more pro-business flair. On Thursday, he named JP Morgan executive William Daley as his next chief of staff, and on Friday he named former Wall Street consultant Gene Sperling as director of the National Economic Council.
THAW IN RELATIONS WITH BUSINESS?
In a speech in Washington on Tuesday, U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Thomas J. Donohue signaled a thaw in relations between the business community and Obama, and lauded the appointment of Daley,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], saying a new tone is coming from the White House.Donohue remains "cautiously optimistic" that the recovery will pick up steam,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but cautioned that the economy will face a "steep hill to climb" in boosting job growth.
CRITICS ASK "WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG?"
While some applaud Obama's recent moves, others are wary that the president is simply on a public relations offensive after taking a "shellacking" in the midterm elections on voters' woes over the high jobless rate.Other critics charge the president with being something of a Johnny-come-lately and for passing a tsunami of legislation - from a healthcare overhaul to cap and trade - while virtually ignoring the plight of the country's jobless.
Brian Darling, director of Senate relations at the Heritage Foundation, noted that the president focused a year on healthcare reform and argued Obama spent little time on economic issues. Obama also waited until late December to push through the tax compromise, he said.8 "I think your average American is upset that this administration worked too hard on issues that have nothing to do with the economy," he said.
"The president was too busy working on completing his campaign promises on healthcare legislation and cap and trade,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said."The American people reject the Obama agenda and want him to spend more time in solving problems of the economy," he said.
ARE "ANTI-BUSINESS" CHARGES UNFAIR?
The White House has countered such arguments by contending that the massive 787-billion-U.S.-dollar stimulus bill was a giant leap toward saving the economy from further ruin.It also maintains other initiatives, such as a bill to help small businesses, as well as the recent compromise with Republicans over tax cuts to the middle class, prove the administration takes the economy seriously.
Ryan McConaghy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], deputy director of the economic program at Third Way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said critics who label Obama as "anti-business" are unfair, as the president inherited an economy on the verge of spiraling into a second Great Depression,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and immediately moved to pass a stimulus package that has been widely credited with pulling the economy back from the brink, creating jobs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and providing a badly needed boost to growth.
Throughout his first two years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he has successfully managed a financial sector rescue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], helped to resurrect the auto industry, pushed for small business credit and tax relief, and proposed job creating investments in infrastructure and innovation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said.Obama has pursued an agenda that has helped the stock market recover and has the U.S. economy heading back toward recovery. In advancing these policies he has been caught between pursuing a centrist policy and acknowledging the anger on the left at the abuses of the Wall Street, he said.
As a result, his rhetoric has at times taken a harsh tone toward the business community."Business leaders aren't sold that he respects and understands business,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rightly or wrongly, there's a breach that needs to be repaired," he said.
Ugg boots (sometimes called uggs) are unisex sheepskin boots, made of twin-faced sheepskin with fleece on the inside and with a tanned outer surface,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], often with a synthetic sole. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] are believed to have been first developed in New Zealand or Australia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although the exact date is uncertain. There has been a dispute between manufacturers of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as to whether "ugg" is a generic term and thus ineligible for trademark protection,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially in the region of origin. Deckers Outdoor Corporation holds the UGG trademark in more than 100 countries worldwide. Notable exceptions are Australia and New Zealand where the term is considered generic.
