U.S. firm says it can “grow” diesel
A biotechnology company says it can produce diesel using the same ingredients that make grass grow, media reported on Monday. The Massachusetts company Joule Unlimited has created a genetically engineered organism capable of producing diesel fuel or ethanol, which can be used to run cars and jet engines.
Joule, a producer of alternative energy technologies, was founded in 2007 and based in Cambridge. The organism that Joule created is called a cyanobacterium, and it uses water,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce and secrete renewable fuels.
Researchers have created fuel from solar energy through the use of corn and algae. But biomass is the “Achilles' heel” of biofuel production because of its fluctuating costs and the expense of transporting, processing and disposing of it, the company CEO Bill Sims said.Joule’s process for photosynthetic fuel production uses a solar converter and microorganism to capture sunlight and convert carbon dioxide and water directly into liquid fuels and chemicals.
Joule claims that it can produce renewable fuels and chemicals — including 15,000 gallons of diesel per acre annually at full commercial scale — at yields that are up to 50 times greater than processes that use biomass. In its projection, Joule can produce diesel for as low as 30 U.S. dollars a barrel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including all of its costs, and ethanol for 50 dollars a barrel.
US Car Sales Up Sharply in February
Sales of new vehicles jumped markedly in the U.S. in February,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with sales by the world's two biggest automakers up the most.Japan's Toyota, the global leader,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said it sold nearly 142,000 vehicles last month,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 42 percent increase over the same month a year ago. Meanwhile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], U.S.-based General Motors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], second in the world, said it sold more than 207,000 vehicles in the U.S. in February. That's a 46 percent jump.
With signs the U.S. economy is slowly improving,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], other automakers also reported robust sales. Ford said its sales were up 14 percent, with Chrysler reporting a 13 percent gain and Nissan a 32 percent increase.GM emerged from bankruptcy last year and has nearly overtaken Toyota as the world's biggest auto manufacturer. It has trimmed the line of models it offers customers in an effort to streamline its operations. Its February sales total was partly boosted by the company's use of various sales incentives.
Analysts say the improving U.S. economy has given some buyers a better sense of security that they will not lose their jobs and can afford to make a big-ticket purchase like a car.One GM official,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Don Johnson, said the sharp rise in the price of oil caused by the political turmoil in the Mideast has not had an impact on car sales so far. He said rising gas prices facing American motorists, however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], could eventually affect sales and shift demand toward more fuel-efficient models.
Combining sneaker classics has been a common habit of Jordan Brand in recent years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the CMFT series is another example of that work. For the Air Jordan CMFT Air Max 12, Jordan Brand combined the sole of the Nike Air Max 97 with a low-cut version of the Air Jordan 12 (XII). They are available in multiple colors, and like the recently released Jordan CMFT Max 11,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], have been receiving a favorable response.
