Also new are a production from La Scala of Verdi's "Attila" (six performances June 12-July 1, 2012), starring bass Ferrucio Furlanetto as the famous Hun and featuring Ramon Vargas and Samuel Ramey as Pope Leo I; and S.F. Opera's own reworking of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" (nine performances from Oct. 15-Nov. 10), to be directed by Italian film and theater director and actor Gabriele Lavia.There are two revivals on the season schedule: The Jean-Pierre Ponnelle production of Bizet's "Carmen" (11 performances from Nov. 6-Dec. 4) will bring mezzo-soprano Kate Aldrich back to reprise the title role she did so well as a last-minute substitute for three performances of the 2006 production. And the season will open Sept. 9 with a gala performance of Puccini's "Turandot," in the bold and colorful production designed by artist David Hockney.
