He closed the door behind them and was about to cross the

switch by the door. A bare light bulb hung from the center of the
entryway. After the initial foyerit revealed a large dark living area with

room and the rest of the house were still swallowed in darkness.

He gave her a sheepish grin. “I stay downstairsless
windows.”

living room to the equally bare kitchen. He opened the door to the
basement stairs and flipped on the stairwell light. If she thought it
seemed less than wise to be following a vampire down a stairwell into
the basement of an empty old house in the middle of the nightshe
gave no sign. She dutifully followed him down the stairs to the equally
bare finished basement. At least there was paneling on the walls and
carpet on the flooreven if it was old cheap industrial carpet.
