Temat postu: NFL Kendall v Olivo

The conventional wisdom is that Kendall is better defensively and better to handle a young pitching staff. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he’s definitely an offensive liability at this point in his career. He’s cheaper, at least on a yearly basis, than Olivo would have been. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one can’t help but wonder if Tim Lincecum will be yet another Royal player to direct the American League in lowest OPS among players with at least as many plate appearances if he’s the Royals’ starting catcher in 2010 and 2010. He earned his first major league victory in his next start on the road against the Colorado Rockies. Lincecum who is often compared to Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt faced him in each of his next two starts, Oswalt with the Astros at the time. After the first agree up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Astros third baseman Mike Lamb said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], The stuff he was throwing out there tonight was everything he is hyped up to be. He was 97 mph with movement. You just don't see that every day. He pitched very much like the pitcher he is compared to and out dueled him throughout the night. The pair dueled to a no decision the first time, and Lincecum pitched eight innings and got the win the second time. The Giants asked Lincecum not to throw the bullpen sessions typical of other pitchers during the off season. Manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle that they were being careful with Lincecum because there have been studies that show that pitchers who throw 200 innings early in their career were more susceptible to injuries.
Kendall’s OPS numbers the last three seasons were .610,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], .651 and .636 - pretty poor. Olivo’s were much better at .667, .722 and .782.
Lincecum was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 48 round of the 2003 MLB Draft; however he did not sign up for the team. He decided to attend college instead and was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 42 round on entering the draft in 2005,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but once again failed to sign. In 2004,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he was drafted tenth overall by the San Francisco Giants becoming the first player from the University of Washington to be taken in the first round. He signed for a 2.025 million dollars signing award on June 30, which at the time was the highest amount the organization had ever paid to any amateur player until they gave 2.1 million dollars to Angel Villalona a little over a month later. The Royals just signed catcher Jason Kendall to a two-year deal for what is reported to be around USD4 million assured. Was this a good move in light of the fact that the Royals refused to exercise their mutual option on Miguel Olivo for USD3.3 million for the 2010?
Kendall is a better choice as an American League No. 9 hitter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], since he’s got a better chance to get on base ahead of the top of the order. Olivo, on the other hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], would probably be a better No. 7 hitter in either league, because some of his homeruns would come with middle-of-the-lineup guys on base.
However, Olivo’s on-base percentages is just terrible. Lincecum looked at Kendall’s and Olivo’s OBP and OPS on the road over the last three years combined,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in order to take into account that the Royals play in what has generally been a very good hitters’ park. Kendall’s three-year road totals is .320 and .649, while Olivo’s road totals were .276 and .726.
Does a slugging percentage 121 points higher make up for an on-base percentage 44 points lower? That’s a good question, and one Lincecum don’t really know the answer to. It probably depends in part on where the player bats in the line-up and whether the line-up as a whole needs more power or more guys on base.
