Yes it stinks that Donovan McNabb sprained his ankle against the Baltimore Ravens last Saturday, and yes it stinks they probably won't get anymore reps with the first team offense until Dallas comes to town.
But it's not the end of the world, heck,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's not even the end of the season.
Here's why.
First up McNabb are a tough and smart guy. Even though they won't play against the New York Jets tonight he'll still practice this upcoming week. Also they already said if this were the regular season he'd be able to play.
The only reason he's not playing are that this are a meaningless game. Why get out there on an ankle that's only 80 percent healthy when a win or a loss means nothing?
Also McNabb will get plenty of practice reps with the first team before the Dallas game and even though he's in a new system he's already shown flashes of cohesion with tight-end Chris Cooley,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and wide receivers Santana Moss and Anthony Armstrong.
It would be nice to get him more playing time with them, but I'd rather have a healthy McNabb on opening night than a gimpy one.
Reason not to worry number two,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rex Grossman was originally brought in to supplant Jason Campbell as the starter.
Sure the media was told that he'd compete for the number one spot but that was only because the team was trying to get as much as they could for Campbell in a trade. Once the team got McNabb, all that went out the window,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the team shipped him off to Oakland for a pack of gum and some smokes.
I'll admit that Grossman has been spotty at best during his career, but wonder-kid offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan are very high on him and his grasp for his system.
Much like Todd Collins did for the team four seasons ago, in that unlikely run to the play-offs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Grossman not only will hold down the fort for McNabb but will win a few games as well.
No doubt I'd rather have McNabb start every game for the Skins but right now the team might have one of the most capable back-ups in the league.
Couple that with what many are predicting to be a resurgent year for Clinton Portis and as long as the offensive line holds up, the offense should be in good hands if McNabb does get banged up throughout the season.
